Mountain Goat Hunts

Alaska Mountain Goat Hunts

The majestic Mountain Goats of Misty Fjords National Monument are a very stable and healthy herd with some of the highest densities in Alaska. Located in the southernmost part of Southeast Alaska, Misty Fjords National Monument has spectacular Fjords, granite walls, mountains, waterfalls and wildlife. Narrow fjords and steep walled canyons are prolific in this area and the active glaciers seen today are remnants of the massive ice bodies covering this area many years ago. Remote and wild, the Misty's support many untouched coastal ecosystems and cover about 3,570 square miles. Several major rivers, hundreds of streams, massive active glaciers as well as volcanic lava flows all make this one of America's truly outstanding scenic wonders.

The Misty's are renown for producing the largest Mountain Goats in the world. In 2007 one of our hunters took the biggest goat in Alaska that measured 11" and 51" net B&C official, as recorded by the Alaska Professional Hunters Association.

In 2008 we had 5 goats over 9.5' , one was 11' and 52" net B&C official and one was 11" and 51 2/8 net B&C offical. These were the 2nd and 3rd largest goats taken in the entire state as recorded by the Alaska Professional Hunters Association.

In 2009 we took 5 goats over 9 1/2" and 4 scored in the all time record books again. Three of these monster goats were officially scored at 51", 51 2/8" and 51 4/8" net B&C official. They will likely take awards as well.

The Misty's produce monster mountain goats!!!

The peaks we climb are 2500 feet to 4500 feet with most goats living in the 3000 to 3500' zone because of the abundant forage. This is a physically challenging hunt as are most alpine backpack hunts. The mountain goats live in steep, broken country and the challenge is rarely outsmarting them, but rather out climbing them. They are easy to spot, relatively easy to stalk, but once again, the climb can be memorable. Alaska Glacier Adventures prefers to hunt the mountain goats from mid-August to mid-October as the days are longer and the slopes are not icy. The mountain goat hunts are very rewarding and most hunters leave feeling awed and humbled at the beauty of the area. The success rate of your hunt increases with your conditioning. We will fly into a high alpine lake (weather permitting) with one of Ketchikan's excellent floatplane pilots. Then we will set up a deluxe tent camp on the lake shore and if conditions allow we will hunt out of this camp. Whole food, and lots of it, will be served and cooked over a Coleman stove unless we decide to spike out. Then freeze dried meals will be utilized along with our spike tent. We will target big mature billie's and have had excellent success taking many record book animals. The billie's we target are 5+ years old, weigh somewhere around 250-400 pounds, have 9 inch horns and have 3-7 inches of hair (depending on the time of year). These are tremendous trophies and the quality of the hunt is second to none. Come join us for the "Adventure of a Lifetime.

Black Bear Hunts

black bear
The coastal Black Bears of Alaska are some of the worlds largest and regularly exceed 350 pounds. Bear's with Boone and Crockett skulls that square in excess of seven feet are frequently taken. A healthy bear will often put on 25 % more body weight by the time late fall arrives. This means a 400 pounder in the spring can be in excess of 500 pounds in the fall. Prince of Wales Island is home to many record book bears and we have put clients on many of these gigantic bears.

In 2006 our hunters took bears that scored 21" B&C official, 20 13/16", 20 7/16", 20 7/16", 20 2/16", 20", 19 7/16", 19 5/16" and 19". The bear that scored 21" was one of the top 3 bears taken in the state as per Alaska Professional Hunters Association annual awards.

In 2007 two of our hunters took bears that scored 21 3/16" B&C official. These bears tied for second biggest bear taken in Alaska as per Alaska Professional Hunters Association annual awards. We also had bears that scored 20 15/16", B&C official, 20 14/16" B&C official, 20 4/16", 19 6/16", 19 5/16" and 19 3/16".

In 2008 our hunters took bears that scored 21 2/16" B&C official, 21" B&C official, 20 15/16" B&C official, 20 12/16" B&C official, 20 10/16" B&C official, 20 6/16" B&C official, and 20 8/16" B&C official. The bear that scored 21 2/16" was the 3rd biggest bear taken in the state at the annual Alaska Professional Hunters Association awards.

The spring hunt for these big Black Bears consists of glassing and cruising the many inlets, bays and passages for bears that are not only rutting, but feeding on tender grasses near the ocean beaches. This hunt is conducted by boat and will find you spending the majority of your day in the skiff or big boat cruising for big bruins. When a suitable bear is spotted, then the excitement begins!

Stalking starts in the boat and ends usually within 100 yards of the boar after a short walk along the beach or forest. Black bears can be one of the hardest animals in Alaska to field judge and much care will be given to ensure it is a mature male with prime hair.

The jumbo Spot Shrimp, delectable Dungeness Crab, delicious Butter Clams, giant King Salmon and ferocious Halibut will occupy most of our daily activities while Black Bear hunting is best done in the late afternoon till last light. Since sunset is normally at 9 to 10 pm, there is plenty of time to hunt and fish.

Sitka Blacktail Deer, Seaduck, Wolf, River Otter, Mink and Fishing Trip

This is one of my favorite hunts as there is no shortage of things to do, catch or shoot. This boat-based hunt for trophy Sitka Blacktail Deer and Seaducks is during the peak of the deer rut on Prince of Wales Island. Prince of Wales is renown for trophy Sitka Blacktails and in 2008 one of our hunters took at least one deer, several took 2 or 3 and you can shoot up to 4 bucks.

The Sitka Blacktail Deer are in the peak of the rut during November and the hunting style is reminiscent of a coyote hunt. This exciting, action-packed hunt will often see the deer running to our fawn-in-distress calls before throwing on the brakes when they almost trample you. The deer hunting is all spot and stalk with calling and rattling being employed. This is a very high success hunt. Depending on the year and the depth of the snow, the deer can often be hunted very close to the beach, but just as likely it can be a very physical hunt with lots of hiking. The deer are delicious eating and a mature buck can tip the scales well over 180 lbs.

Prince of Wales is home to some of the best deer hunting in all Alaska with several record book bucks being taken annually. In 2008 one of our hunters took the 2nd largest deer taken in Alaska at 108 3/8" B&C official as per the Alaska Professional Hunters Association annual awards.

Alaska fishing and hunting

The Sea duck hunting is world class and we have many decoys and skiffs to help you shoot some of these beautiful, full-plumed, ducks for mounting. Harlequin, Oldsquaw (Long-Tailed duck), Surf Scoter, White-wing Scoter, Common Scoter, Barrow's Goldeneye, Merganser, Canada Geese, Mallards, and Blue Wing Teal are all some of the species we regularly target. We hunt over decoys and your ducks are properly tagged, bagged and frozen everyday. We have shotgun ammo for you at $20/box and settle up at the end of the trip so you don't have to travel with it.

Trapping season starts December 1st and with the purchase of a trapping license you can hunt for wolf, river otter, and mink with a rifle or a trap. These hunts are one of the best opportunities on the continent to bag one of these cunning, wary animals. The combination of so many huntable species adds to this already unique hunt. Come experience the best of Southeast Alaska. This scenic hunt is the best all-around hunting experience offered anywhere.

Hauling the shrimp and crab pots and feasting on the fresh seafood puts a smile on everyone's face and coming back to the warm dry "GLACIER" every night makes for a wonderful experience.
