Alaska Glacier Adventures
Southeast, Alaska

~Alaska Glacier Adventures offers some of the best Mountain Goat, Bear, Wolf, Deer and Duck hunting in Alaska~

Mountain Goat Hunting

The majestic mountain goats of Baranof lsland are a very stable and healthy herd with about 1300-1600 animals. The highest peak on Baranof Island is 5230 feet and most goats live from 500 feet to 4500 feet depending on the time of year. This is a physically challenging hunt as are most alpine backpack hunts. The mountain goats live in steep, broken country and the challenge is rarely outsmarting them, but rather out climbing them. They are easy to spot, relatively easy to stalk, but once again, the climb can be memorable. Alaska Glacier Adventures prefers to hunt the mountain goats from mid-August to mid-October as the days are longer and the slopes are not icy. The mountain goat hunts are very rewarding and most hunters leave feeling awed and humbled at the beauty of the area. The success rate of your hunt increases with your conditioning. We will fly into a high alpine lake (weather permitting) with an excellent pilot that operates a Cessna 185 on floats and has over 40,000 hours! The pilot, Ken Bellows, operates Air Sitka and in most people's opinion, is the best pilot on floats in Alaska. That is a lifetime of flying and he has never had a wreck! We will then set up a deluxe tent camp on the shore of a lake and come back to the tent most every night if conditions allow. Whole food, and lots of it, will be served and cooked over a Coleman stove unless we decide to spike out. Then freeze dried meals will be utilized along with our spike tent. If conditions and circumstances allow, we will target Sitka Blacktail Deer as well as big, mature Billies. The Billies we target are 5+ years old, weigh somewhere around 250-350 pounds, have 9 inch horns and have 3 to 8 inches of hair (depending on the time of year.) These are tremendous trophies and the quality of the hunt is second to none. Come join us for the "Adventure of a Lifetime."

Black Bear Hunts

The coastal Black Bears of Alaska are some of the worlds largest and regularly exceed 350 pounds. Seven (7') bears with Boone and Crocket skulls are frequently taken. A healthy bear will often put on 25 % more body weight by the time late fall arrives. This means a 400 pounder in the spring can be in excess of 500 pounds in the fall. The spring hunt consists of glassing and cruising the many inlets, bays and passages for bears that are not only rutting, but feeding on tender grasses near the ocean beaches. This hunt is conducted by boat and will find you spending the majority of your day in the skiff or big boat cruising for big bruins. When a suitable bear is spotted, then the excitement begins! Stalking starts in the boat and ends usually within 100 yards of the boar after a short walk along the beach or forest. Black bears can be one of the hardest animals in Alaska to field judge and much care will be given to ensure it is a mature male with prime hair. The jumbo Spot Shrimp, delectable Dungeness Crab, delicious Butter Clams, giant King Salmon and ferocious Halibut will occupy most of our daily activities while Black Bear hunting is best done in the late afternoon till last light. Since sunset is normally at 9 to 10 pm, there is plenty of time to hunt and fish.

Sitka Blacktail Deer and Seaduck Hunts

This scenic hunt is the best all-around hunting experience offered anywhere in Alaska. The Sitka Blacktail Deer are in full rut and the colorful Seaducks are in full plumage. Hauling the shrimp pots and crab pots and feasting on the fresh seafood put a smile on everyone's face while coming back to the "GLACIER" every night makes for a wonderful experience. A normal trip will find us sitting by our decoys at first light blasting away at the numerous Harlequin, Oldsquaw (Long-Tailed Ducks), Barrow's Goldeneye, Common Goldeneye, Surf Scoter, Common Scoter, White-Winged Scoter, Bufflehead, Common Merganser, Red-Breasted Merganser, and the occasional King Eider and Common Eider. It is not uncommon to take home a dozen different species of seaducks, Alaska Spot Prawns, and Dungeness Crab.

The Sitka Blacktailed Deer are also a likely target as they are in the peak of the rut during November and the hunting style is reminiscent of a coyote hunt. This exciting, action-packed hunt will often see the deer running to our fawn-in distress calls before throwing on the brakes when they almost trample you. Depending on the year and the depth of the snow, the deer can often be hunted very close to the beach, but just as likely it can be a very physical hunt with lots of hiking. The deer are delicious eating and a mature buck can tip the scales over 150lbs. Prince of Wales is home to some of the best deer hunting in all Alaska with several record book bucks taken annually.

Sitka Blacktail Deer and Seaduck Combo Hunt Package Rates:
5 day deer hunt;    US $2,900

Wolf Hunts

This is one of my favorite hunts as there are few animals as cunning and smart as the wolf. The Wolves are hunted two ways. The first is spot and stalk which employs the use of many calls and decoys and is very similar to coyote hunting. The other method is to trap them with various traps. We will check the traps and call them every day and use the boat for transportation to and from the hunting areas. The wolves of Southeast Alaska usually travel in packs, so the opportunity of taking more than one wolf at the same time is high. Hunting from boats is the norm and we usually cruise the bays, passages and inlets looking for wolves at all hours of the day. These hunts are one of the best opportunities in the entire continent to bag a trophy wolf with your own rifle. Most of the wolves in the springtime are hungry and readily come to our calls only to be met by your gunfire! Wolves are the ultimate predator and have reduced the deer and black bear populations on several islands in Southeast due to their excellent hunting skills. There is no shortage of wolves, only wolf hunters, so come help us save the black bear and deer by WHACKING A WOLF! Shrimping, crabbing, clamming and fishing can all be done on these hunts. This is a relatively low-exertion hunt and the long daylight hours make for productive days. Come hunt the ultimate predator and experience the best of Southeast Alaska.
